Yesterday we passed along a rumor that said Google had decided to stop production of a stand alone high-end VR headset it was supposedly working on. According to the report, the device was to run on an different operating system than Android, and would have competed with devices already shipped like Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. 50 Google employees were said to be working on the project.
Today, another rumor from anonymous tipsters inside Google say that yesterday's report was wrong, and the company is still working on a high-end headset that will support both AR and VR. While the Android powered Daydream VR platform will still generate its own stand alone headset, that device will be powered by Android. The high-end headset being worked on by Google won't need to be paired with a smartphone, and will have more AR features than most VR headsets offer.
While we don't have any clue as to what to expect on the device, back in February there was speculation that the headset would come with outwardly facing cameras, and contain sensors produced by Movidius. The latter is one of the leading providers of motion based chips.
